Xen is a hypervisor that handles paravirtualisation. The project was created in 2003 in the form of a research project at Cambridge University in England.
Paravirtualisation refers to a virtualisation system's ability to interact with virtualised systems. This makes virtual machines more efficient and easier to administrate. Xen was derived from a university research project and is now a part of the Linux kernel. Citrix offers an enterprise edition of the solution along with the associated support.
