OpenVZ is a lightweight virtualisation solution for Linux that was created in 2005.
Like any simple virtualisation solution, OpenVZ can only run Linux systems. This handicap is however offset by performance levels much closer to native levels than any other type of virtualisation, particular for inputs/outputs, and the solution also uses less memory. OpenVZ is primarily used in development and test environments, where it is not uncommon to have dozens of systems installed on the same host.
