The open source image editor GIMP leaves SourceForge

The creators of the software announced that they are withdrawing their solution from the open-source hosting platform SourceForge, whom they accuse of imposing advertisements on their site and in their downloaded software packs.

The authors of the article on www.gimp.org precise that SourceForge, which was once “a useful and trustworthy place to develop and host FLOSS applications”, now allows “Download here” buttons to appear on their site, which leads visitors to accidently download unwanted applications.

However the tipping point for the creators of GIMP was the introduction of their own SourceForge Installer software, which bundles third-party offers with Free Software packages.

The creators of GIMP have chosen to leave now SourceForge and distribute the software themselves, from their FTP server and mirror servers. The url on SourceForge, which will remain active for some time, will redirect users to these new ways of downloading.
