University of Paris 8 replaces Photoshop with Krita

After a participatory round of financing that raised more than €20,000 in funds, Krita, an open source graphics solution that provides an alternative to proprietary software, has been adopted by the University of Paris 8.

This is good news for the Krita project team and a great start to 2015. The Image Arts and Technology (ATI) Department at the University of Paris 8 plans to replace its use of Photoshop with Krita this year. The department’s mission is to teach students how to use graphic (2D, 3D, special effects and compositing) software solutions, as well as to introduce them to the basics of their programming (in Python, C# and C++).

The decision was made after David Revoy gave a presentation of the software and a demonstration of how easy it is to transition to Krita. This presentation, given at the initiative of ATI compositing teacher François Grassard, provided an in-depth explanation of the advantages of the interface and the functionalities of Krita 2.8.

Special functionalities

The most popular functionalities amongst users are related to its comprehensive list of merge modes and texture modes. For example, the possibility of performing complex compositing via the layer stack and of modifying the code are particular favourites.

An inability to change the perspective was underscored during the presentation, but that shortcoming has already been corrected and the feature will be available in the next version of the software.

Experience with open source software

The ATI Department is no newcomer to transitioning to open source software. In fact, its students regularly use Blender and Natron when building their projects.
