Repositories on the GitHub platform have doubled in 2013

The number of repositories on the hosting and management development platform, used by many open source projects, has increased from 5 million to 10 million during the past year.

In 2013, the platform launched in April 2008 reached ten million repositories. To celebrate the site created a brief history of the use of its services.

GitHub reached the first million repositories less than four years after its creation, while the last million was achieved in less than 50 days. GitHub published a graph showing that the growth spurt began in 2012.

The site took the opportunity to remind readers of the leading projects hosted on GitHub in 2013, namely the White House’s Open Data project, the Tate Metadata (metadata for 70,000 works of art that the Tate owns or jointly owns with the National Galleries of Scotland) and numerous projects launched by Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Square, Twitter and Walmart.
