Open source on the rise in Vienna

The Austrian capital is increasingly making use of open source software, although there is still ground left to be conquered in that domain.

New technological requirements, open data, budget constraints, the struggle with proprietary “lock-in”, and the explosion of smartphones and tablets are all factors encouraging the city to turn more and more toward open solutions, Joinup affirms.

More specifically, Vienna possesses or uses open source software such as Linux servers, Apache instances, databases managed with PostgreSQL and MySQL, and WordPress websites, and also uses Pentaho’s business intelligence solution for its data mining and reporting.

Further, the city utilizes open source software as desktop applications, although proprietary lock-in does prevent the complete adoption of an open source office suite.

Vienna is also developing its own solutions, such as its e-Gov Form server.
