GNU system celebrates 30 years

The 27th September, 2013 will be the 30th birthday of the GNU operating system, which was at the origin of the free software movement, launched by Richard Stallman on the 27th September, 1983.

The goal of Richard Stallman was to create an operating system compatible with Unix and consisting entirely of free software. The GNU Project is now an essential component of GNU / Linux distributions.

For the 30th anniversary of the initial announcement, the Free Software Foundation (FSF), which controls the GNU project and helps promote free software and user rights, will organise several events, which will primary be held in Cambridge, at the MIT, on the 28th and 29th September, 2013, in the presence of Richard Stallman.

The 30th anniversary of GNU will also be celebrated in France: Richard Stallman will give a conference at Biot on the 19th September, at Télécom ParisTech on the 20th September and at the Université Paris 8 (Saint-Denis) on the 21st September.

The initial announcement of the GNU Project and the GNU project manifesto are available on the website of the GNU project.
