Docker raises $95M for its containers

Docker, the open source start-up specializing in container technologies has announced a new funding round to the tune of $95 million. This latest operation supplements the $49 million in funds initially raised in September last and is earmarked to build its commercial and container platform development capacities.

The fund-raising involved Docker’s earlier partners (Benchmark, Greylock Partners, Sequoia Capital, Trinity Ventures and AME Cloud Ventures) but also brought in new investors: Coatue, Goldman Sachs and Northern Trust.

ThisDockerfunding action testifies to the market’s growing interest in containerization technologies and rounds out the company’s operations in the mobility and cloud sector. Surprisingly, this round was conducted at a time when Docker had not yet exhausted all of the $40 million it raised last autumn.David Messina, Docker’s Vice-President of Enterprise Marketing, confirms that this recapitalization was designed to enable Docker to grow while ensuring it has the capacity to meet future enterprise needs.

Docker’s post-investment objectives are clear. The first involves enhancing security, given that the firm has experienced several critical security breaches in recent months. The second relates to boosting network and storage management capacities. Lastly, Docker will be developing its container image management service,Docker Hub.

Containerization

As a reminder, Docker is an open source solution (distributed under the Apache 2.0 license) and a series of services created by French developerSolomon Hykes. It automates application rollouts, making it possible to bundle an application with its dependencies in a virtual container, to then run on any Linux server.

Since the publication of Docker’s source codes, the company has attracted some big-name technological partners. For example, it enjoys the support of Google, Amazon, IBM and Microsoft, to name but a few. All of this has made Docker a de facto standard in the field of containerization.
